Reading the stretch instead of panicking about it

Updated August 2026 · 4 min read

Outdoors, the plant flips itself once daylight drops under roughly 14.5 hours. You don't do anything except recognize it's happening and hold your feed steady.

What the stretch looks like

A rapid increase in height, often close to doubling on the tallest colas, over about ten days, alongside the first visible pistils. It can look alarming if you're expecting steady, linear growth.

The mistake to avoid

Reading the stretch as a nutrient problem and changing feed right when the plant most needs consistency. The stretch is a hormonal response to daylight, not a sign of deficiency.

What to do instead

Stop any training. Anything you top or tie down during the stretch just gets sacrificed as the plant redirects energy into vertical growth and pre-flower sites. Let it run its course.
