A tomato trellis for the price of a roll of string
T-posts and construction line, with the vines woven through as they grow. It costs a fraction of cattle panel, packs away to nothing in October, and it fails in exactly two ways: too few posts, and too many plants between them.
If cattle panel arches aren't in the budget this year, the fallback isn't tomato cages. It's a row of T-posts with string run between them, which is the method market growers use when they need to trellis a hundred plants and can't afford a hundred cages.
It's usually called the Florida weave. Two things make or break it, and neither is the string.
The parts
T-posts, and taller than you think. This is the mistake worth spending a paragraph on: an indeterminate tomato will end the season somewhere between six and ten feet. It will be taller than you are, on purpose, and it will be carrying fruit up there.
A post needs eighteen inches to two feet in the ground to stay put under that load. So a six-foot post leaves you about four and a half feet of usable height, and your plants pass that in July. Buy seven- or eight-foot posts. The extra couple of dollars each is the difference between a trellis and a lesson.
Real string. Nylon mason line (the stuff sold as construction or brick line) or heavy jute. Not the thin green garden twine, which stretches under load, rots through by August, and lets go in the exact week the plants are heaviest.
The tradeoff between the two: nylon won't rot but is slippery and has to be tied properly, and you'll be picking synthetic string out of the bed for years if you let it get shredded into the vines. Jute grips knots beautifully and can go on the compost pile with the vines in fall, but it weakens over a wet season and may need doubling up on the lower tiers.
Spacing, which is where rows fail
Posts every four to six feet. Not eight. Not "one at each end and one in the middle."
Two or three plants between posts, maximum. This is the crowding problem, and it bites twice.
The first bite is structural: string between two posts is a suspension line, and every plant you add is more weight pulling the middle down and the posts inward. Four or five plants in a six-foot gap will bow the line and lean the posts by August.
The second bite is disease. Tomatoes packed shoulder to shoulder don't dry out after rain or morning dew, and wet leaves that stay wet are how septoria leaf spot and early blight get started. Keep plants eighteen to twenty-four inches apart and you get airflow through the row, which is free disease prevention.
End posts carry the most. Every tier of string terminates on them and pulls inward from one side only. Drive them deeper than the middle posts, or angle them slightly outward, or run a guy line to a stake. A row that fails usually fails at an end post first.
Weaving it
The plants are never tied to anything. They're sandwiched between two lines.
- When plants are about ten to twelve inches tall, tie the string to an end post six to eight inches off the ground.
- Run it down one side of the row, passing on the outside of each plant, and wrap it once around each T-post as you go (a wrap or a half hitch, so the tension stops at each post instead of migrating down the whole row).
- At the far end, go around the last post and come back down the other side of the row, again outside every plant.
- Tie off. Each plant is now held between two parallel lines.
Pull each run genuinely tight. The line will slacken as the plants push against it, and slack is what lets a row sag.
Feeding the vines through
This is the recurring job, and it's the part people skip until the row is a mess.
Every eight to twelve inches of new growth, call it every week or two in July, add another tier. Same pattern, higher up. Before you run the new line, walk the row and tuck any leaders that have flopped outside the strings back into the channel between them. Do it while the stems are still green and flexible; a thick stem that's been growing sideways for two weeks will snap when you try to move it.
Take thirty seconds per plant. Guide the growing tips up through the middle, don't force anything, and let the new tier hold them there.
Two more things by midsummer:
- The lower tiers are load-bearing. Check them when you add a new one. If the first tier has gone slack or frayed, add a second line alongside it rather than trying to re-tension the original.
- Decide what happens at the top. When plants reach the top of the posts you either top them, cut the growing tip, which pushes energy into the fruit already set, and in a short season that's usually the right call anyway, or you accept that everything above the last tier flops over and grows down.
What it's good and bad at
Good: cheap, fast to build, and it packs away to a bundle of posts and a spent roll of string. No storage problem in the off-season, which is a genuine advantage over cattle panel arches if you don't have somewhere to keep sixteen-foot panels.
It also suits determinate and semi-determinate varieties best. They stop growing at a set height, so three or four tiers finishes the job.
Bad: the whole row is one system. A cage failing loses you one plant; a leaning end post takes the row with it. It also wants maintenance on a schedule: miss two weeks in peak growth and you're untangling instead of weaving.
And it's genuinely worse than rigid panel for big indeterminates. Eight feet of vine and fruit hanging on string wants more tiers, tighter post spacing, and more of your attention than the same plant on welded wire. If you're growing a few plants and already have the panels, use the panels. If you're growing twenty, this is how it gets done.
